MAGNUM RICE

TECHNOLOGICAL REVOLUTION

Hera nei Campi has started an unprecedented technological revolution: bringing back RICE cultivation to southern Italy, with cultivation techniques never used before and new varieties of rice.

Thanks to the second year of research at the Azienda Agraria Zootecnica of the University of Naples Federico II, studies have been conducted for the rice cultivation in the Sele plain, taking advantage of the cold greenhouses intended for the cultivation of excellent baby leaves (the young leaves and petioles of any product of the group “leaf vegetables”) and fitting naturally into the crop rotation of the plain.

The idea of resuming the ancient cultivation of rice in the “Principality of Salerno” was born from collaboration of Hera nei campi with agronomists Giampaolo Raimondi and Emilio Di Stasio after a study of historical documents.

This type of cultivation reduces the environmental impact of the crop by absorbing the surplus of nutrients from the ground, it brings forward the plant cycle and the harvest compared to the traditional method. The crop is also protected from weather events.

For the following years, our agronomists chose dry cultivation with localized micro-flow irrigation, also called drip irrigation, which increases precision and eliminates water waste. Testing of hydroponics to grow rice even in winter is already planned.

The project will continue to experiment with new techniques at every stage of rice cultivation and processing.

SUSTAINABILITY

Experimentation for sustainable and ecological cultivation is implemented by limiting the use of water and non-organic products as much as possible.

Virtuous water
management through
all irrigation
techniques.

Reduced use
of pesticides
and defense
products.

Faster growth
of crops and
increased
production.

Reuse fertilization organic residues,
rice wastes themselves and rice straw.
